Svetlana Gasanova is a post-doctoral researcher at The Cyprus Institute. She studied Physical Chemistry at the Saint-Petersburg State University and received her PhD in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Her research at the CyI concentrates on chemical characterization of artifacts and works of art with the focus on pigment analysis using non-destructive analytical techniques.

Since May 2014, she was involved in the STARLAB project as a post-doctoral research fellow. She has been working on the characterization of the polychromy of ancient Cypriot statues dating from VII B.C. – II A.D., a collaborative project of CyI and the Centre for the Research and Restoration of the Museums of France (C2RMF). She also took part in the chemical analysis of illuminated Byzantine manuscripts dating from XII century. Within the Salamis Terracotta project, she currently performs the characterization of terracotta fragments focusing on the chemical analysis of clays and painted decoration.

Research Interests

Non-invasive analytical techniques (X-Ray Fluorescence spectroscopy, VIS-reflectance spectroscopy and spectrocolourimetry, Optical microscopy, Multispectral imaging, Fourier-Transformed Infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy); Pigment analysis; Analysis of clay composition
